Let’s start off with a bit of trivia. What is Dr. Peterson’s busiest day for broken brackets? It’s November 1st! Halloween night is a great time to chow down on Halloween candy and treats. However, as you probably already know, you should put a little extra thought into what and how you eat while you have braces. Let’s take a closer look.
There are lots of foods you CAN eat with braces, although some take a few alterations. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, and pizza are easier to eat if you cut them into small pieces instead of taking a bite out of a whole.
And…there ARE a few foods to stay away from in order to avoid damaging your braces. Avoid eating hard or crunchy foods such as pretzels, popcorn, nuts, hard candy, or ice. Sticky candies such at starbursts, gummy bears, and bubble gum can also be also troublesome.
Proper care can prevent most broken brackets, but accidents do happen. If you break a bracket, call the office during business hours. Often you will be instructed to save the bracket and wait for your next appointment. However, sometimes our team may instruct you to come in for a sooner appointment if needed.
Remember, patients who have no broken brackets get an extra raffle ticket every time they come into the office for an appointment at Peterson Family Orthodontics. Broken brackets can slow the process of straightening your teeth, so do your best to prevent them by avoiding hard, crunchy, sticky, gooey candy on Halloween!
Dream big. Smile on!
