Happy October! It’s hard to believe it is already Halloween time. Children, teens, and adults all love to enjoy Halloween treats. You may have heard that you can’t eat candy with braces on, but that’s not entirely true. Dr. Peterson wants you to have fun and enjoy your holiday. Here are some ideas of candies and treats that are safe for people in braces to indulge in.
- Plain chocolate, such as a Hershey bar or Hershey Kiss
- Peanut butter cups
- Kit Kats
- Milky Way
- 3 Musketeers
- Lollipops (as long as you don’t bite down on them)
- Soft cookies and brownies
- Ice cream or milkshakes
- Apple slices
Treats to trade with others
Unfortunately, there are certain candies to avoid while you’re in braces. If you could describe it as hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy, it is best to trade it with a friend or sibling.
- Jelly beans
- Anything with nuts
- Hard candies if you know you will bite them
- Whole caramel apples
- Bubble gum
Don’t forget to brush
Braces-friendly treats can still cause decay. After you chow down on sugary candy, be sure to brush and floss. Keep that smile clean and healthy!
Call your orthodontist if you think something is broken
If you accidentally eat something hard or sticky and notice that part of your braces seems loose, call your orthodontist and let them know.
Have a safe and spooky Halloween!
