Easy Ways to Improve Oral Health in Braces

Our oral health is so important to our overall health and quality of life. Deciding to pursue orthodontic treatment is a great first step in improving your oral health. Once in braces, caring for your teeth may seem more complicated than it used to. Fortunately, there are easy ways to improve your oral health even with braces on.

Brush Well and Often

Dr. Peterson recommends that all patients in braces should brush after each meal for three minutes each time. Removing plaque and small particles of food keeps your mouth happy and healthy. If you can’t brush right away, rinse well with water.

Consider an Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are wonderful for people in braces. There are many models to choose from, but they all work well for braces as long as a soft brush head is used. Dr. Peterson likes Oral B and Sonicare electric brushes.

Floss Every Day

Use a floss threader to help you guide the floss under the wire. If you have trouble, there are products you can purchase that will help. A water flosser is a great tool for flossing with braces. You can also buy special floss picks called Platypus flossers that are designed for use with braces.

Avoid Chewing on Hard Objects

Don’t chew on ice cubes, pencils, fingernails, or any other hard objects. They can damage your teeth and braces. You could break a bracket, or even chip a tooth.

Limit Snacking

Frequent eating of typical snack foods like crackers or cookies can contribute to tooth decay. When you snack, rinse well with water after you are done. Try to choose healthy snacks, like sliced fresh vegetables or cheese.

Consume Sugar in Moderation

Sugary beverages like juice and soda are delicious, but not so good for the teeth especially while in braces. Try to reduce how much sugar you consume. Drink your beverage in one sitting instead of sipping over several hours. Rinse well with water after enjoying sugary drinks.

Keep Your Dental Appointments

See your dentist at least every six months for a cleaning and checkup. Your dentist will keep an eye on your oral health. He or she can take care of small concerns before they become big problems.

Remember, you only have to take care of the teeth that you want to keep! Resolve to treat your mouth right, and you will enjoy a bright healthy smile for years to come. Choosing to straighten your smile is a great way to improve oral health. If the time is right for you or your child to get braces, give your friendly San Tan Valley orthodontist a call today!
