What to Expect When You Get Your Braces Off

You’ve put in months of hard work caring for your braces, wearing your rubber bands, and visiting the orthodontist. Now all that effort is about to pay off… it’s time to get your braces off! This is the special day that every patient looks forward to.

How long does it take to remove braces?

Expect to spend about an hour in our office. This gives us time to remove the braces, polish the teeth, and take final records. Plan on coming back within a day or so to pick up your retainers, which should only take a few minutes.

What will happen at the appointment?

The orthodontist will do a final check just to be sure that everything is good to go. A small plier is used to gently squeeze each bracket until the glue breaks. You’ll hear popping sounds and feel some pressure.

Next, the orthodontist will polish your teeth with a dental handpiece to smooth off the glue left behind. Sometimes this feels a little cold.

Now a series of photos will be taken of your gorgeous new smile for our records. We will also take two quick x-rays and a digital scan of your teeth to make your retainers.

After the appointment

You can go back to your regular routine after your braces are off. Be sure to schedule an appointment to come back within a day or two to pick up your new retainers.

How do I keep my teeth straight after braces?

You’ll need to wear your retainers full time for at least two months. At that point, Dr. Peterson will have you come to the office for a retainer check. If everything looks good, you can start wearing the retainers at night time only. You must wear your retainers at night for the rest of your life to keep your teeth straight.

Dr. Peterson and his team love seeing your first reaction to your new smile. Don’t be surprised when we cheer and make a big fuss for you! Peterson Family Orthodontics in San Tan Valley AZ offers complete orthodontic care, from that first consultation all the way through braces removal and beyond.
