Braces-Friendly School Lunches

If your student got braces over the summer, they will need to be a little more careful about what they eat for lunch at school. Most foods can still be eaten, but kids will need to cut or tear them into pieces and chew with their back teeth. Here are a few ideas for braces-friendly lunches.

Packed lunches:

Tuna salad or egg salad sandwich

Ham or turkey sandwich

Peanut butter & jelly sandwich

Pasta

Soup (pack in a Thermos to keep warm)

Tortilla pinwheels

Hummus and pita

Beans and rice

Round out your student’s lunch with tasty foods like sliced fruits or vegetables, string cheese, applesauce, pudding, yogurt, or soft granola bars. Quick tip: sprinkle sliced apples with lemon juice and they won’t turn brown.

Cafeteria lunches:

Mac and cheese

Shredded chicken, beef, or pork

Soft chicken nuggets or fish sticks

French fries

Soft rolls

Soup

Casserole

Salad without crunchy veggies

Mashed potatoes

Pizza with softer crust (eat with fork and knife)

Beans

Rice

Steamed veggies

Foods to avoid:

Whole apples

Whole carrots

Nuts

Hard chips like Takis

Nachos

Thin crust pizza

Crunchy tacos

Croutons

Hard bread or rolls
