Ready to take the plunge and straighten your smile? If you would like to start orthodontic treatment, there are a few things you should do beforehand.
Ask your friends and family for recommendations
If you don’t already have an orthodontist, ask around and see who your friends and family have been treated by. You can also ask your family dentist for a referral to an orthodontist.
Think about what kind of treatment you would like
There are several options for people looking to straighten their teeth. Are you interested in traditional braces, clear braces, or clear aligners? Research the pros and cons of each.
If you have dental insurance, find out if braces are covered
Be sure to understand your coverage. Many companies won’t pay if treatment is already in progress. The orthodontic staff will usually contact your insurance company for you before your consultation appointment to confirm your benefits and factor them into your cost.
Schedule a consultation
Most orthodontists offer free consultations. At this appointment, photos and x-rays will be taken and the doctor will perform an exam to determine what treatment is needed. If you decide to get braces with that particular doctor, you can sign your paperwork and set up your appointment to get your braces on. At Peterson Family Orthodontics, we are often able to put your braces on the same day!
If extractions are recommended, get a second opinion
With modern orthodontics, it’s not common to need extractions. Always get a second opinion before removing healthy teeth.
Indulge in foods that will be off-limits during treatment
Hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy foods need to be avoided during orthodontic treatment with braces. So go on and enjoy some Takis while you can!
Take a “before” photo
The orthodontist will take records, but it’s nice to have your own picture to look back on after your treatment is complete.
Smile!
You’ve made a great decision! Braces will give you a beautiful healthy smile that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.
Consultations at Peterson Family Orthodontics are completely free, so there’s nothing to lose by scheduling an appointment to see what kind of treatment may benefit you. Call us today!
