Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) Treatment
MARPE, or miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion, is an advanced orthodontic treatment used to gently widen a narrow upper jaw. Unlike traditional expanders, MARPE is designed for teens and adults, when jaw growth is more developed and conventional expansion may no longer be effective.
At Peterson Family Orthodontics, we focus on treatments that improve both function and comfort, not just appearance. By expanding the upper jaw at the bone level, MARPE helps create proper space for teeth, improve bite alignment, and support long-term stability. It is a modern solution for widening the upper jaw without surgery.
MARPE Is a More Advanced Approach to Palatal Expansion
Effective, precise, and designed for growing and fully developed smiles.
Designed for teens and adults
Targets skeletal expansion, not just tooth movement
May help avoid surgical expansion in some cases
Improves space, bite alignment, and overall arch shape
What Is MARPE Orthodontic Treatment?
MARPE uses a custom-fitted palatal expander that is anchored with small, temporary miniscrews placed in the roof of the mouth. These miniscrews allow the appliance to apply gentle, controlled force directly to the upper jaw bone.
MARPE may be recommended for patients with:
- A narrow upper jaw
- Crossbites or bite imbalance
- Crowding caused by limited space
- Upper jaw constriction that traditional expanders can’t correct
Because the force is directed to the bone rather than the teeth, MARPE offers more predictable and stable expansion, especially for older teens and adults.
How MARPE Treatment Works
MARPE works by gently separating the mid-palatal suture (the natural seam in the roof of the mouth). This allows the upper jaw to widen gradually and naturally over time.
After the appliance is placed:
- The expander is activated in small increments
- Pressure is applied slowly and safely
- Bone adapts as new space is created
- Teeth are given room to align properly
Patients typically feel pressure rather than pain, especially during early activation. A temporary space between the front teeth is common and expected. It’s a sign that expansion is working and will close as treatment continues.
The active expansion phase of palatal expander treatment usually lasts a few weeks, followed by a stabilization period to allow the bone to fully set.
Why MARPE May Be Right for You
MARPE allows your orthodontist to address jaw width issues at the source, rather than compensating with tooth movement alone.
Benefits can include:
- Improved bite and jaw balance
- More room for crowded teeth
- Better long-term orthodontic stability
- Reduced need for more invasive treatment options
Not every patient is a candidate, but a consultation with Dr. Scott and imaging allow us to determine whether MARPE is the right fit for your needs.
FAQs About MARPE
Is MARPE painful?
Most patients describe MARPE as feeling like pressure rather than pain, especially during the early activation phase. Some mild soreness or tightness is normal at first, but it typically improves as the mouth adjusts. The miniscrews are small, and placement is done carefully to keep patients comfortable. If your palate expander hurts, talk to your orthodontist.
How long does MARPE orthodontic treatment take?
The active expansion phase of MARPE usually lasts a few weeks. After expansion is complete, the appliance stays in place for several months to allow the bone to stabilize. Total time varies based on individual needs and whether MARPE is combined with braces or Invisalign®.
What is the difference between MARPE and a traditional palate expander?
Traditional palate expanders rely mostly on tooth movement and are most effective in younger children. MARPE is anchored to the bone using miniscrews, making it more effective for teens and adults and producing more stable skeletal expansion with less unwanted tooth tipping.
Can MARPE help adults avoid jaw surgery?
In some cases, MARPE orthodontic treatment can reduce or eliminate the need for surgically assisted palatal expansion. While not every adult is a candidate, MARPE offers a less invasive option for widening the upper jaw when surgery might otherwise be considered.
Does MARPE work with braces or Invisalign®?
Yes, MARPE is often used as a first step before or alongside braces or Invisalign®. By creating proper space in the upper jaw, MARPE helps teeth move into healthier positions and can improve overall orthodontic results.
